Massive Resection of Small Intestine After Penetrating Gunshot Wound

Abstract
|

|
This 27 year old male patient was involved in a penetrating gunshot wound on abdomen resulting massive injury of mesentery, multiple rupture of the small intestine and laceration of right common iliac vein which necessitated extensive resection of all of the small intestine, except the proximal 70 cm of jejunum and the distal 30 cm of terminal ileum.
And end-to-end jejunoileostomy and ligation of right common iliac vein were performed. Postoperatively the body weight was decreased from 120 lb. to 105 lb. for 80 days.
Reviewing this patient, a diet control and medical and surgical treatment of massive small bowel resection were discussed with brief review of the literatures.
